  • Milk futures, cash dairy mixed Thursday

    Milk futures and the cash dairy prices were mixed Thursday on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.  May was up $0.19 at $17.41.  June was up $0.09 at $17.64.  July was down $0.01 at $18.05. August was up $0.01 at $18.41.    September through November contracts ranged from unchanged in November to seven cents higher in October.     Dry whey was up $0.0025 at $0.3850.  Two sales were recorded at that price.  Thursday was the third consecutive day with no spread for blocks and barrels. ...     

  • Ag land protection key to climate strategy

    The American Farmland Trust says increasing support of agricultural conservation easements in the next farm bill would provide long-term climate benefits. Senior Policy Advisor Cris Coffin tells Brownfield recent research with Purdue University finds easements are the reason farmers invest more in conservation practices. “I think one of the most important benefits is that folks who have protected their farm or ranch understand that they are now in it for the long haul, not just for them, but for the generations to come,” she says. ...     

  • Pork profitability turns a corner

    An animal protein analyst says pork producers’ profits may have changed course. Brian Earnest, at CoBank, tells Brownfield after 17 straight months… “Producers are back in the black after being in the red for several periods, so you know, maybe some room for optimism as we’re thinking about 2024,” he says. Earnest says declining feed costs have been a major factor, but so has the uptick in domestic demand. ...     

  • MO FFA President: the FFA opportunity

    The outgoing president of the Missouri FFA Association says the FFA continues to have many opportunities for its members. Sam Tummons tells Brownfield “it’s a place everyone can be successful, not just farm kids. Traditionally, it’s a very agricultural rooted organization, but you don’t have to be a farm kid to be successful. The things we do revolve around feeding the world.” Tummons says he plans to become an ag teacher after he graduates from the University of Missouri. ...
